2013-03-28 encfs Helper Revisited

I wrote previously about encfs. Since I started using it, I became a big fan - I use it for all project-related work. For me, it has the advantage of having project-related stuff in a project-related uniquely encrypted directory. In contrast, most OS-level encryptions, such as File Fault, will encrypt your entire home directory, but won't let you differentiate within that directory. So encfs gives me more flexibility.

Recently, I updated the helper script to use "public" mounting (when root mounts an encrypted filesystem) and to locate the true "encfs" binary, instead of expecting it in /opt/local/bin.

Here's the result. Use it if you like. The instructions are -as before-, copy/paste it to a file /usr/local/bin/encfs or into any other directory in your execution path. Just make sure that it's invoked before the true "encfs" executable that you have lying somewhere.

Feedback als always welcome...

#!/usr/bin/env perl

use strict;
use Cwd 'abs_path';

# [KK 2010-02-16] 1.00, first version
# [KK 2013-03-28] 1.01 --public mounting added. Locating true encfs added.
# Directory argument may start with a dot.
# [KK 2013-04-01] 1.02 Small bugfix
my $VER = '1.02';

# Find the true encfs.
my $encfs = undef;
my $this_ino = (stat($0))[1]
  or die("encfs: can't even stat myself: $!\n");
for my $p (split(/:/, $ENV{PATH})) {
    my $that_ino = (stat("$p/encfs"))[1];
    if ($that_ino != $this_ino and -x "$p/encfs") {
        $encfs = "$p/encfs";
        last;
    }
}
die("encfs: didn't find a true encfs executable\n")
  unless ($encfs);

if ($#ARGV == -1) {
    print STDERR <<"ENDUSAGE";

This is encfs helper $VER
Copyright (c) Karel Kubat <karel\@kubat.nl>. All rights reserved, GPLV3 applies.

Use as follows:
- Create two directories in the same path, DIR and .DIR (one with a leading
  dot)
- Use "encfs DIR" or "encfs .DIR" to mount DIR,
  encrypted files will go into .DIR, viewable files will be in DIR
- use "umount DIR" to unmount
- If you do this as root, then DIR will be accessible for all users on the
  system, otherwise DIR will be private to one user

The original encfs usage information follows:

ENDUSAGE
    system($encfs);

    exit(1);
}

# If the argument by chance is a directory starting with a dot, then
# remove it - we depend on the non-dot dir present.
if (-d $ARGV[0] and $ARGV[0] =~ /^\..*/) {
    $ARGV[0] =~ s{^\.}{};
}

# Smuggle in the dot-directory of encrypted files if not given.
if (-d $ARGV[0] and $#ARGV == 0) {
    my @parts = split('/', $ARGV[0]);
    $parts[$#parts] = '.' . $parts[$#parts];
    unshift(@ARGV, join('/', @parts));
}

# Convert all args to absolute paths.
my @args = ( $encfs );
if ($ENV{LOGNAME} eq 'root') {
    print("Mounting in public mode (we're root).\n");
    push(@args,'--public');
} else {
    print("Mounting in private mode (non-root user).\n");
}

for my $a (@ARGV) {
    if (-f $a) {
        push(@args, abs_path($a));
    } elsif (-d $a) {
        push(@args, abs_path($a) . '/');
    } else {
        push(@args, $a);
    }
}

# Exec true encfs
print ("Running: @args\n");
exec( {$encfs} @args );
die("Failed to exec $encfs: $!\n");
